The Youth Board
At the Youth Project we believe it is essential that youth have the power and decision making ability to determine the kinds of programs and services that need to be offered. Who better to know what youth need and want than youth! As a result, we have a Youth Board, comprised solely of youth who make these important decisions. They work separately but alongside the Board of Directors. Here is a run down of the Youth Board. We are always looking for interested people...
What is the Youth Board?
The Youth Board is one of the governing bodies of the Youth Project. The Youth Board works with the staff and the Board of Directors to ensure that the Youth Project runs and continues to provide programs and services that meet the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth in Nova Scotia. The Youth Board:
- Is responsible for everything about the Youth Project, in partnership with the Board of Directors and the staff
- Is made up of youth, 25 and under, who use the Youth Project’s services
- Has control over a budget for dances, parties, retreats, whatever we decide!
- Is open to any youth members who are interested
Who is on the Youth Board?
The Youth Board is comprised solely of youth, 25 and under, across Nova Scotia who have an interest in making decisions and having a say in the way that the Youth Project is run. The members of the Youth Project can be any youth who have participated in Youth Project services or programs in any way (that could be through the groups, counselling, retreats or any other activity). Members can be of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
So whether you have participated for years or just come by once, you can get involved with the Youth Board! There are also several committees if you have just one area you are interested in.
Why is there a Youth Board?
The Youth Project has always been very youth-directed. It is important that youth have control over what the Project does. That way the Project can provide the kinds of programs, activities and services that youth need and want. The Youth Board ensures that youth have a major role in the Project.
Why should I join?
We need your ideas. We need to know what you like, what you hate, what you wish the Project would do more of. There are lots of exciting new projects going on, and more we could be doing. We need members in order to make it work. Besides the regular programs, the Youth Board plans our big annual events such as the prom and pride week. They also plan special events such as guest speakers and workshops. If you are interested in taking on a leadership role and being more active, check it out. Being a Youth Board member gives you opportunities to be a leader, provides opportunities for training and self development, is a lot of fun and looks great on a resumé or college application!
What does it take to Join?
If you have some time to spare, some energy and some great ideas that is all you need! If you are afraid you don’t have the skills or experience, don’t worry about it. You can learn these things while you are on the Youth Board. Just by being involved with the Youth Project, you are already qualified. It’s not hard, you can choose exactly what kinds of things you want to work on, and sometimes we order pizza. So... WHY NOT?
If you are interested just let us know!
